TOFU, MOFU and BOFU: using the content funnel to capture leads

Plenty of sites pull in thousands of visits a month and fail to turn any of them into sales.

Plenty of sites pull in thousands of visits a month and fail to turn any of them into sales. Volume counts for very little if people leave without giving you a way to reach them. The problem is not visibility, it is the absence of a structure that turns that traffic into real opportunities.

People arrive at your site at different points in their decision. Treating them all the same breaks the experience and costs you conversions. To stop those visits going to waste, your content has to match the exact stage each person is at.

What TOFU, MOFU and BOFU mean

They stand for the three stages of the conversion funnel: top, middle and bottom. Together they describe the path someone follows from the moment they notice a problem to the moment they decide to buy. When your content lines up with what the user wants at each stage, you guide them forward, build trust and make conversion far more likely.

TOFU: bringing in qualified traffic

The top of the funnel is discovery. Someone has identified a problem and is looking for general information. The job here is to attract qualified traffic with educational content built for search. Blog posts, introductory guides and explainers work best. This is not where you sell, it is where you teach.

MOFU: turning interest into a lead

In the middle of the funnel, the user understands their problem and starts looking at solutions. This is the moment to turn that interest into a lead, and where lead magnets come in: valuable resources people are willing to trade their details for. Ebooks, templates, checklists and webinars do particularly well here.

BOFU: turning leads into clients

At the bottom of the funnel, the user is ready to decide. Content here aims straight at conversion. Case studies, comparisons, demos and free trials remove objections and build confidence. This is where content stops being informational and becomes a sales tool.

Joining the three stages up

A funnel does not work if each stage sits on its own. TOFU content should point towards MOFU resources through well-placed calls to action. Once the lead is captured, automation carries the relationship forward until it reaches BOFU content built to convert. The point is not to produce isolated pieces, but to build a system where every piece has a job.

The funnel as a steady source of leads

Applying the TOFU, MOFU and BOFU model turns content into a predictable lead-generation system. Go through what you have already published and work out where each piece sits. Spotting the gaps is the first step towards a complete strategy. There is more in our guide on building a content calendar, and on adapting your funnel to SEO, GEO and AEO.
